A user-centered design project to visualize changes in voter turnout in the United States. Voting in the United States has a complicated history and changes depending on the political climate and historical context of the election year. On the website whovoted.com, users can select a year and explore an interactive map that shows voter turnout by state.

Scrolling through the years allows the viewer to see how voter turnout changed in each election. Each map also has additional information on demographics and historical events, allowing for further understanding and exploration of how voter demographics changed each year. The prototype version of the website includes functioning data for the years 2020, 1920, 1964, 1984, and 2008. Use the button below to view:

Data and Components

The fully-animated prototype utilizes hundreds of individual components to create the animated graphs, reactive maps, and working menus the website needs. Below you can see examples of these components and how they organize the data found from my research. The website also includes a resources page so users can see exactly which part of the Census Bureau each year's data was sources from.
